Marathon County, Ginseng Mecca

By the early 1960s, 200 of the estimated 300 acres of cultivated ginseng grown in the United States were grown in Marathon County in central Wisconsin. As more farmers learned of the potential profit for raising ginseng root, the industry expanded rapidly. From 1970 to 1983, the number of growers in Marathon County increased by ten times; from 1983 to 1997, grower numbers doubled once more, to 827 growers and 2,125 acres. But with declining prices and worldwide competition, Marathon County’s ginseng grower numbers declined to 402 with 1,070 acres grown in 2002. Statewide, the number of acres decreased from about 4,000 in 1996 to 2,135 in 2002. Nonetheless, Wisconsin remains the leading producer of cultivated ginseng in the nation.1

To assist with the promotion and marketing of Wisconsin’s ginseng, the Ginseng Board of Wisconsin, with offices in Marathon County, was established in 1986. Funded through a mandatory assessment of ginseng acreage under shade, the organization created a Wisconsin Ginseng Seal in 1991 to identify ginseng grown in Wisconsin.2
